Allegro Welding Safety

Usually, and increasingly as a matter of record rather than judgement. Welding fume carries metal oxides, and where the base metal, filler or coating contains chromium, nickel, manganese or cadmium the exposure limits are low enough that a plain helmet is not an answer.

Stainless is the clearest case: hexavalent chromium under 29 CFR 1910.1026 has its own permissible limit and its own requirements.

PAPR is the usual answer for general shop and structural work. No hose, the welder moves freely, and the filter handles fume well.

Supplied air is what tanks, vessels, confined spaces and heavy coating removal call for – anywhere the atmosphere itself is in question, or where the fume load would load a filter too quickly.

Not inside an approved assembly. A NIOSH-approved supplied-air or powered-air respirator is approved as a complete assembly – headtop, hose, couplings and air source – and substituting any part voids the approval, however well it fits.

Allegro do make hardhat and browguard adapters for the non-respirator shields, which is a different question. Ask us which of the two you are actually trying to do.
